Mental Health Services

We provide specialist mental health services in a hospital setting.

What we do

The Mental Health Clinical Program (MHCP) at the The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) provides specialist care for adults experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions.

Services

Inpatient services at TQEH include a specialist acute mental health unit, which includes:

  • Cramond Clinic – Acute Care and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
  • Consultation Liaison Service
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ETC) Service
  • Short Stay Unit (SSU)
  • Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS).

Our facilities are designed to support recovery in a safe, therapeutic environment, including private, enclosed courtyards for calming outdoor access, while also maximising the natural light and visibility.

We support:

  • adults aged 18-65 with severe or complex mental health needs
  • older adults 65+ (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) through OPMHS.

Whilst you can present to the Emergency Department, this is not the preferred way to access mental health care.

The most effective way to seek support, including in crisis or urgent situations is to contact the SA Mental Health Triage Service. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is staffed by experienced mental health clinicians who can:

  • coordinate urgent mental health assessments
  • offer advice and support
  • refer you to the most appropriate service, including community or acute teams.

Western Community Mental Health Services

The Western Community Mental Health Service is available to support and assist both individuals and referrers to access mental health services.

Open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, the service can:

  • assess and triage individuals
  • refer to the most suitable mental health service
  • arrange urgent responses when necessary.

Community Teams can assist in urgent situations, however in emergencies and for people at immediate risk, call triple zero (000).
